Sticking to our promise, the Aurora team has continued its search for the perfect pub in Farringdon.
As a reminder, we have been rating pubs under the following parameters:
• Atmosphere
• Selection of drinks
• Bar food
• Pricing – £ = good value, £££££ = extortionate
Our most recent expedition brought us to the Hat and Tun, a popular pub with a Victorian feel to it. A definite hit with all of us, the pub offered a good range of tipples, along with an old favourite, Doom Bar. At the back of the pub, there was even an open fire, perfect for a blustery winter evening.
Taking everything into account, we would give the Hat and Tun:
5/5 – Atmosphere
4/5 – Selection of drinks
2/5 – Bar food
££ – Pricing
Prior to the Hat and Tun, we also visited:
The Crown Tavern, situated on Clerkenwell green, held many a surprise. Arriving to what seemed a very busy pub downstairs, we were directed upstairs to a beautifully festive area, complete with a 12 foot Christmas tree. With very attentive staff and a huge range of beers and ales to choose from, this made for a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
4/5 Atmosphere
5/5 – Selection of drinks
3/5 – Bar food
£££ – Pricing
The Exmouth Arms has been undergoing renovations since our move to Farringdon and has only recently re-opened. And it seems to have been worth it. It was very busy, probably due to the run up to Christmas, which gave it a great buzz and anywhere that serves mulled wine on a chilly winters evening gets the thumbs up from us!
4/5 – Atmosphere
4/5 – Selection of drinks
2/5 – Bar food
£££ – Pricing
The Eagle, which claims to be London’s oldest gastro pub, is always popular due to its great food, however there is a somewhat limited selection of drinks and you never ask for ketchup with your meal. It is considered uncouth.
3/5 – Atmosphere
2/5 – Selection of drinks
5/5 – Bar food
££££ – Pricing
The Three Kings, tucked off the main roads around Farringdon, is a hidden little gem and the source of a great evening. Whilst it is very small and cramped, as long as you have a table, you can’t go wrong. The pork pies are a sight to behold, perfect with a nice cool pint.
4/5 – atmosphere
3/5 – selection of drinks
4/5 – Bar food

Still holding on to the number one spot for our favourite boozer is the Jerusalem Tavern.
The current rankings are:
1. The Jerusalem Tavern
2. The Betsy Trotswood
3. The Hat and Tun
4. The Eagle
5. The Crown Tavern
6. The Coach and Horses
7. The Three Kings
8. The Green
9. The Wilmington Arms
Having now visited a total of a total of nine pubs, there are still many out there to test out. Our mission continues!
