Facebook ease the setting of privacy

Posted on 27. May, 2010 by neilcrump in Communications, News, Web 2.0

We sent this tweet last night:
@PhilBaumann Zuckerberg was on BBC main news re change to
FB privacy settings http://ow.ly/1Qmlh ^NC #hcsmeu #hcsm
We would encourage you to check your Facebook privacy settings now that it is easier to undertake. Make sure you have your privacy set to meet your requirements: whether you want to lock it down or open it up. The default settings before this announcement were skewed to limited (to no) privacy. Those of you that want privacy should definitely take action.
If you go to the link in the tweet above you can get the lowdown on the situation from the BBC. The beeb has also got links in the article to the history of FB privacy and a guide to walk you through the new settings.

I have updated my privacy settings. It is much easier and the grid gives a good overview but it could be even better. Some of the facebook defaults were a bit odd and you have to select customise if you want to select ‘only me’. Still not that straightforward really.

I’ve set my privacy settings in accordance with Facebook’s recent updates some weeks ago. One of my more conspiratorially-minded friends sent me this message in typical alarmist fashion (it does the trick though):

“ATTENTION ! As of yesterday, there is a NEW PRIVACY setting called “Instant Personalization” that shares data with non-Facebook websites and it is automatically set to “Allow.” Go to Account > Privacy Settings > Applications and Websites > What your Friends can share about you > Edit Settings, then uncheck all options”

    Surf safe!
