World Cup fever begins in Camden

Posted on 23. May, 2010 by neilcrump in News

The World Cup is back and last Friday saw Team Aurora draw our teams in a sweepstake.  Our office is full of football lovers and even those not all that bothered by football (like me) will be drawn in. This brilliant Nike advert sums up beautifully what the World Cup is all about.  This is a quality piece of advertising summed up by our Aaron’s in a tweet: Nike Writes the Future – possibly most audacious, amazing tv ad I have seen.

Enjoy…

There are loads of spin-off ads from this core one – here are two of the Rooney ones.  One when he gets the goal and Roger Fedeger wants to be his best friend…

One where he misses the goal and ends up living on a caravan site…

I saw the Nike advert for the first time last time after the England v Mexico game – it’s amazing…how much must that have cost???! I also really like the current Carlsberg team talk advert created by Saatchi and Saatchi. It has some amazing big names in..it’s like a who’s who of sporting greats

PS. I have Argentina and Ghana in the sweepstakes…two extremes of the football scale – although I was told at a BBQ at the weekend that Ghana could be dark horses….(I will believe that when I see it) Go England!!!

Yesterday I read that ITV made a real balls up – they ran this advert during the Champion’s League Final on Saturday night but missed off the last few seconds where the Nike brand and website is displayed. Subsequently, ITV may have to pay compensation of 1.75 million quid. An interesting formula to calculate opportunity to see and revenue loss, and a very expensive mistake by an ITV technician. Nike have gone big with this advert – the sports shop in Camden is already full of point of sale material for “Write the future”. I’ve not checked the Nike website, but I bet it has a social media element, where fans can determine what the next instalment of the advert will look like. Then perhaps ITV can (help to) pay for it to be produced…!

What an amazing ad! It may be rather tongue in cheek but it shows how a moment’s spontaneous footballing genius can have an immediate global impact, in much the same way that 3 minutes’ air time after an England World Cup prep game will surely have a global effect on Nike’s standing on the greatest sporting stage.

Anyway, it certainly got me excited about the football this summer. I really can’t wait. Until the future is written, I’ll be hoping…

The YouTube channel for this is going off the radar – people sure love these ads. The Facebook page is also proving very popular (‘Like’able). For the record I drew the following teams in the Aurora sweepstake: Holland, Slovenia and Uraguay. Wish me luck – I could win £35 wohow :+)

These ads are very clever indeed and do a great job of stoking up World Cup fever. I particularly like the Rooney Caravan one. It reminds me somewhat of Uncle Rico in the film Napoleon Dynamite when he’s outside his orange caravan filming himself throwing footballs (American ones) ‘Ohhhh, man I wish I could go back in time. I’d take state.’ If you are not familiar with the film then here are some clips to whet your appetite: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=napoleon+dynamite&aq=f
As a football (soccer) lover I’m really looking forward to the World Cup although having picked Honduras in the office sweepstake, I’m not holding up much hope of winning the jackpot. I guess that’s my comeuppance for getting Spain in Euro2008…..

I’m a Nike man through-and-through, but check out this world cup offering from Adidas, who continue to epitomise retro-cool. From walk this way to slice this way!!
